Meridian Community College Receives American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds

Dear friends of MCC:
 
This website is designed to promote transparency and accountability in regard to Meridian Community College’s expenditure of federal ARRA funds. MCC was originally allocated some $558,101 in ARRA funds; however, as Mississippi tax revenues lagged behind projections for several months in the midst of the national economic downturn, Governor Haley Barbour elected to reduce ARRA funds to all community colleges. As a result, MCC’s final ARRA allocation totaled $529,717.
 
MCC determined to use the ARRA funds to defray the cost of utilities and scholarships, in accordance with the federal guidelines on acceptable usage of the appropriation. The ARRA funds provided some much needed relief to MCC in light of the college losing approximately $1.4 million in state appropriations for FY10.
 
The college chose to use the funds for (1) utilities because of their rising cost and for (2) scholarships because of the direct benefit to students. Also, the additional scholarship support helped to produce all-time record enrollments at MCC, the tuition-and-fee revenue from which also helped to offset losses in state appropriations.
 
MCC wishes to thank U.S. taxpayers and all those government officials who made the ARRA program possible and for its support of America’s community colleges.
