Little Big Band to perform premiere concert Oct. 20

A newly-formed musical group, The Little Big Band, will be making its premiere performance for the next Arts & Letters Series concert, and community residents are invited.

The Little Big Band is literally half of the 18-piece jazz ensemble and director and performer Carey Smith promises an evening of high energy fun and entertainment at this Thursday, Oct. 20, Arts & Letters Series concert. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the McCain Theater.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The idea behind this newly-formed ensemble of the nonet – set of nine is not new in the musical world. In 1948 jazz great Miles Davis did a recording experiment that he called nonet. Many ensembles since have shown a creative flair in their choice of instruments used in this group size as no traditional instrumentation has set a precedent to follow.

This ensemble will allow the players more solo room and a chance to create their own arrangements. And for this Oct. 20 concert, a portion of the material will be original and some will be traditional standards created in a fresh new style for this ensemble.
