The Phantom of the Opera Auditions
“Music of the Night.” “Think of Me.” “All I Ask of You.” These hauntingly beautiful songs (and others) will sound on the Meridian Community College’s McCain Theater stage when the College’s Arts & Letters Series presents The Phantom of the Opera Nov. 10-12.
Auditions for this musical are set for Sunday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m. in the McCain Theater. Participants are asked to bring a prepared piece and be prepared to learn and sing 16 bars that will be provided at the audition, said Dr. Todd Brand, chairman of the College’s fine arts division.
The Phantom of the Opera shares the tale of Christine Daae. She was brought up in the Paris Opera house when her famous musician father suddenly dies, telling her he will send her and angel of music to look after her. She grows up and discovers that she is hearing a voice, telling her and teaching her to sing. She believes he is the angel of music but in fact he is a disfigured genius, the phantom. He falls in love with her. Although she is fascinated and drawn towards the phantom, she falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. The phantom gets madly jealous, kidnaps Christine, and threatens to kill Raoul. She, to save Raoul, agrees to marry the phantom and kisses him. He then realizes what he's done and then makes Christine go with Raoul, disappearing forever.
Principal characters are Christine Daae, a chorus girl (soprano); The Phantom, a composer and magician as the Opera Ghost (baritone/tenor); and Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, patron of the opera, childhood sweetheart of Christine (baritone/tenor).
Featured characters are Monsieur Firmin, co-manager of the opera (baritone); Monsieur Andre, co-manager of the opera (baritone); Carlotta Giudicelli, the prima donna of the opera (soprano); Madame Giry, the ballet mistress (mezzo-soprano); Ubaldo Piangi, leading tenor of the opera, Carlotta’s husband (tenor) and Meg Giry, Madame Giry’s daughter, member of the ballet chorus, Christine’s best friend.
Brand said the rehearsal schedule will be determined at a later date.
