MCC’s Surgical Technology Program posts 100 percent pass rate

Surgical TechnologyFor the first time in the program’s history, Meridian Community College Surgical Technology Program scored a 100 percent pass rate on the first write on their national boards, said Mecklin Soules, program instructor and coordinator, during a pinning ceremony held Thursday on campus.

“These results show that you never gave up,” Soules said as she shared the news with students, family, friends and college administrators at the conclusion of the program’s pinning ceremony. Soules said the eight students are now certified surgical technicians.

Members of the Class of 2018 are Amanda Adank and Jada Turnbow, both of Meridian; Taran Collins of Enterprise; Davis Douglas of Quitman; Lamanda Vick of Amory; Tyra McCallum of DeKalb; Latoya Thomas of Shubuta; and Toneshia Smith of Heidelberg.

“It is only a year to learn every specialty,” Soules said, noting the arduous work involved in the program. However, she added, “when they leave, they are ready for the workforce.”

At his first official public speaking engagement with a group of Meridian Community College students, Dr. Thomas Huebner, MCC president, said, “I know you’ve worked very hard to get to the place you are today.”

The students have compassion and passion for their chosen career, he said, and addressing the class members, Huebner said, “you’re not just going to be a part of a job, you’re going to be in a position where you can absolutely make a difference in someone’s lives – an important difference.”

He added, “we’re proud of you … we see big things for you.” Huebner also encouraged the students to continue learning and to pursue their dreams and goals.

Also, during the ceremony, Soules recognized two class members who were spotlighted in the College’s spring Awards Night program. Vick was honored as Sophomore Military/Veteran of the Year and McCallum was tapped as Outstanding Surgical Technology Program student of the Year.

A slideshow presentation reviewed and reflected the students’ experiences in and out of the classroom.
