Write the equation for the line through the point (-1 2) and perpendicular to the line 2x + 5y = 24.

First, solve the equation for y to find the slope.

The slope = -2/5

The slope of the perpendicular line will be 5/2

2x + 5y = 24

5y = -2x + 24

y = -2/5 x + 24/5

y – y1 = m ( x – x1 )

y – 2 = 5/2 ( x + 1 )

y – 2 = 5/2 x + 5/2

y = 5/2 x +9/2

or

2y – 5x = 9

or

5x – 2y = -9
