Write the equation for a line that is perpendicular to the line -2x + 3y + 5 = 0 and passes through the point (4, 5).

First, solve the equation for y to find the slope.

-2x + 3y + 5 = 0

3y = 2x – 5

y = 2/3 x – 5/3

The slope = 2/3

The slope of the perpendicular line will be – 3/2

y – y1 = m ( x – x1 )

y – 5 = -3/2 ( x – 4)

y – 5 = -3/2 x + 6

y = -3/2 x + 11

or

3x + 2y = 22
