Write the equation for a line that contains the point (-1, -2) and is parallel to the line 2x – 9y – 8 = 0

First, solve the equation for y to find the slope.

2x – 9y – 8 = 0

-9y = -2x + 8

y = 2/9 x – 8/9

The slope = 2/9

y – y1 = m ( x – x1 )

y + 2 = 2/9 ( x + 1 )

y + 2 = 2/9 x + 2/9

9y + 18 = 2x + 2

9y = 2x – 16

y = 2/9 x – 16/9

or

2x – 9y = 16

The slope of the parallel line will also be 2/9
