Write the equation for the line through the point (5, 4) and parallel to the line y = -2x – 5.

y – y1 = m ( x – x1 )

y – 4 = -2 ( x – 5 )

y – 4 = -2x + 10

y = -2x + 14

The slope of the line y = -2x – 5 is -2

The equation is

y = -2x + 14

or

2x + y = 14

or

2x + y – 14 = 0
