Meridian Community College’s Arts & Letters Series will put the spotlight on choral performances when it showcases the High School Choral Fest Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m.
This concert will be held at the Mississippi State University Riley Center in Downtown Meridian. Admission to this musical showcase is free of charge, and the community is welcomed to attend.
Three local high school choir ensembles, Northeast, West Lauderdale and Lamar, will perform as will MCC’s own Concert Choir plus the groups will combine for a mass choir presentation, said Tammy Miles, MCC concert choir director.
The Northeast Lauderdale High School Choir is under the direction of Jennie House and accompanied by Sidney Covington. The students will be performing “I Feel the Spirit,” “Light in the Hallway,” “Once Upon a Time from ‘All American’” and “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy.”
The West Lauderdale High School Choir is in its fifth year of re-establishment and is under the direction of Twyla Hurst. The choir has grown both musically and numerically offering students the opportunity to study choral literature, vocal production, music theory and musical performance. This semester’s chorus features 53 members in grades nine through 12. Their accompanist is Miles. Their sections will include “Sing Me to Heaven,” “Waka Waka,” “Trashing the Camp” and “This Is Me.”
The Lamar School choir is directed by Timothy Wise Pogue. The ensemble will present, “Deo Dicamus Gratias,” “Shenandoah” and “Kyrie Eleison.”
The host choir, The MCC Concert Choir, consists of both majors and non-majors and focuses on performing choral music from a variety of style periods. The Concert Choir in addition to playing on the Arts & Letters Series bill, also perform at the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Choral Festival each spring and gives back to the community through charitable concerts and programs throughout the year. Select members of the Concert Choir are also members of the Dimensions Ensemble. Scholarships are available for full-time students. The Concert Choir is under the direction of Miles and accompanied by Barry Germany. For this concert, the group will perform, “I Am Not Yours” and “The Mountain of the Lord.” The Dimensions will present, “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “If I Ever Fall in Love.”
As a highlight, the groups will combine to present, “Glow,” “Runnin’ Home to You” and “Let Everything That Hath Breath.”
